Learn About The Miniature Pinscher

Posted on

If you want to have a dog, you may decide that you want to have something small. In that case, you might consider getting a miniature pinscher. Before you get a puppy, you need to make sure that you know a little bit about the breed to get the best pet you can.

History

It's important to note that while the min pin looks like the Doberman pinscher, the min pin isn't a smaller variation of the Doberman. At best, they are distant cousins. The dogs are both a descendant of the Old German Pinscher, but that's where their relations end. The miniature pinscher is actually a cross of the Italian greyhound and a dachshund, with the German pinscher thrown in. When you look at the dogs, you can see the dachshund in their genetic history because they tend to have a longer back than other dogs do. There is pictorial evidence that the min pin has been around for a long time, but there really isn't much actual documented proof that they existed long ago, but this still puts them as an older breed.

Standards

The miniature pinscher is in the toy group of the AKC. Those dogs tend to be the smallest breeds. In this case, it fits. The min pin should be between 10 and 12.5 inches tall, and their length should match their height. The females may have a slightly longer back than the males do. The dogs, especially if they are being shown, generally have a docked tail and docked ears, but many vets won't do that anymore, especially for dogs that will be pets. There are concerns about causing unnecessary trauma to the dogs with surgeries that aren't necessary. There are several color variants that the miniature pinscher can have, though the most common is black with brown points.

Grooming

Min pins are pretty easy to groom. They have a single coat, which means that there isn't the worry of their coat blowing every year. The coat is a smooth coat with relatively short hair. You will need to wash it periodically and brush it occasionally. You will need to make sure that you keep them warm in the winter because their coat won't keep them all that warm in the cold weather.
