4 Things To Consider When Choosing A Pet Fence For Your Yard

Posted on

In most families, dogs are far more than just furry little beings – they are family members. When you love something or someone, you do everything in your power to ensure that they remain safe and healthy for as many years as possible. One step that you can take to ensure that your canine family member stays safe is to install a pet fence. Here, you'll learn a few tips that can help you make decisions about the pet fence around your yard.

Jumping Abilities

It can be very difficult to contain larger dogs that have great jumping abilities. When you are considering the fencing for your yard, make sure that it is high enough to keep the dog from jumping over it. Typically, large dogs will need at least a 5 foot fence, some may require a 6 foot fence, however, you should never discount the jumping abilities of your little dog either. When motivated, those little dogs can jump nearly as high as larger dogs.

Digging

Does your dog tend to dig in the yard? If so, the fencing that you install will need anti-dig posts installed. These are installed just inside the fence to keep the dog from tunneling underneath the fence.

Another option is to pour large gravel, like river rock, along the inside base of the fencing. This will make it more difficult to dig, but they still have a chance of getting out.

Burying chicken wire is another option, but it can hurt your dog's paws when he's very determined to get out.

Temptations

If your dog doesn't do well with temptations, you may want to invest in a pet fence that is completely enclosed – no way for your dog to see what's on the other side of the fence. If you can limit the number of temptations your dog has, he is less likely to want to escape the yard and will work less to evade the enclosure.

Supervision

If you don't plan on spending every minute with your dog while he's in the fenced in yard, it's important that you take every safety measure possible. This means that you should include anti-digging tactics, choose the highest fence possible and choose an enclosed fence with zero visibility. Also, don't forget to include locks on any gates so that you don't have to worry about anyone stealing your dog.
