Signs Of Distress In Your Dog: What To Watch For

Posted on

A dog isn't able to tell you what's wrong, so it's up to you as dog parent to keep an eye on your furry pal and get him help if you spot anything unusual. Dog's may not be able to tell you verbally that something is wrong, but they may show you with their actions. Read on for signs of distress to watch for in your dog.

Excessive Drooling

If Fido is suddenly drooling constantly, it could be a few issues. If your dog was outside on a hot day, he could have heat stroke. If your dog is drooling and panting excessively, is unable to eat or drink, your dog may be suffering from heat stroke. Get your dog to a shady area or a cool spot, once your dog has calmed down a bit, try to give him small amounts of water. If your dog is still unable to drink or eat get him to the veterinarian for a checkup.

If your dog is drooling and wasn't outside at all, it could be due to a tooth infection or gum disease. If your dog is pawing at his muzzle in addition to the drooling, get your dog to the veterinarian for a dental checkup and for treatment.

Consuming Grass

If your dog is eating grass in the yard, it may be due to a digestive issue. Your dog may have a stomachache, and eating the grass will help him either throw up or poop. If you spot your dog outside eating grass, allow him to do so. If he still has issues, get him to the veterinarian for a checkup to be sure he didn't eat anything that caused a blockage in his digestive system.

Restlessness

A dog that is restless and cannot sit still or lay down may be feeling pain of some sort. Take your dog to the veterinarian for an exam to figure out what is causing him pain. It could be a digestive issue, or it could be an internal injury of some sort. Taking him to the veterinarian can help relieve your dog's pain and get him the rest he needs.

Lethargic

If your dog is suddenly more lethargic than normal, sleeping a lot, not playing with his ball as he normally would, it could be a number of things. It could simply be aging, or it could be something else such as pain, an intestinal blockage, or even depression. Take your dog to the veterinarian for a full exam and treatment options.

Your dog isn't going to tell you what's wrong, but he may show it. If you think something may be wrong with your dog be sure to get him the help he needs to alleviate your dog's pain and to keep him healthy and happy. For more information, contact your local animal hospital.
